Description
PT-141 (Bremelanotide) is an investigational synthetic cyclic heptapeptide that acts as a melanocortin receptor agonist. Unlike phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors such as sildenafil or tadalafil, which primarily influence erectile function through the vascular nitric-oxide pathway, bremelanotide acts through melanocortin signaling within the central nervous system.
FDA Access Data
Bremelanotide is particularly notable because it is the active pharmaceutical ingredient in Vyleesi, which the FDA approved for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD) in premenopausal women.
The FDA-approved indication is specific; it is not an FDA-approved treatment for male erectile dysfunction or general sexual-performance enhancement. U.S. Food and Drug Administration
Research has investigated melanocortin signaling in relation to sexual desire, arousal and reproductive neurobiology, with bremelanotide also studied in other populations and sexual-function disorders.
At Kinetus Biolabs, PT-141 is positioned as a research compound for investigating melanocortin receptor biology, central sexual-function signaling and neuroendocrine pathways.
